Northern California pizzeria Pizza My Heart, a chain of restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area founded in 1981 in Capitola, California, has had a busy spring season working with plant-based providers—and promoting them to its passionate fan base. Most recently, it partnered with Miyoko's Creamery and Beyond Meat to expand its plant-based pizza offerings to all of its 25 locations, starting May 25.

Pizza My Heart initially tested vegan pizza offerings at two of its restaurants using Miyoko’s new Cultured Vegan Pizza Mozz (which launched earlier this year, exclusively for foodservice) and Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausage. The new items were immediately popular, and the pizzeria helped spread the word by partnering with Field Roast Plant-Based Pepperoni in honor of Earth Day (April 22), to encourage people to give plant-based pizza a try. From April 11 to May 8, guests received $5 off a large, $4 off a medium, or $3 off a small Vegan Sur pizza, or any build-your-own pizza topped with Field Roast Plant-Based Pepperoni.

Pizza My Heart had seen even more demand for more plant-based options in the weeks leading up to the chain-wide adoption in late May, thanks to its partnering with not only Field Roast but Miyoko’s and Beyond Meat. Some of the vegan-friendly offerings now available on the menu include the Mt. Diablo, with Beyond Meat Hot Italian Sausage, Miyoko’s Cultured Vegan Pizza Mozz, pizza sauce, garlic, fresh mushrooms, pickled peppers and fresh parsley; and The Mendocino, with Miyoko’s mozzarella, pizza sauce, Roma tomatoes and garlic, topped with breadcrumbs, fresh basil and drizzled olive oil. The plant-based cheese can also be substituted on any other pizza offered at Pizza My Heart.

Even better, to help celebrate the official launch, 25% of net proceeds from all Miyoko’s-topped vegan pies during the week of May 25 were donated to Humane Society Silicon Valley and SPCA Santa Cruz.

“Pizza My Heart first introduced plant-based, vegan pizza options two years ago. We added Field Roast Plant-Based Pepperoni to our Vegan Sur pizza as a permanent menu item in April 2021, and it has been a leading seller ever since,” says Chuck Hammers, owner and president (known as “The Big Cheese”) of Pizza My Heart. “The plant-based pepperoni has an authentic, bold taste that adds depth to any of our pizza offerings.”

Customers are making a healthier choice with the pepperoni as well. As the first pepperoni alternative to be made with pea protein, it provides the same amount of protein per serving as traditional pepperoni, but with half of the sodium, fat, and saturated fat of meat-based types, without GMOs or artificial flavors. The Vegan Sur Pizza is made with 40 cloves of roasted garlic, Field Roast Plant-Based Pepperoni, portobello mushrooms, vegan sausage, green onions, and the Miyoko’s plant-based mozzarella.

When asked about his selection of plant-based providers, Hammers says his first consideration is flavor. “Pizza My Heart is known for great tasting, award-winning pizza, and we wanted to bring that same experience to our vegan pizzas,” he explains. “We tried a lot of vegan products that simply didn’t taste great, but there’s been so much progress in the last few years. Miyoko’s vegan mozzarella, Field Roast pepperoni and Beyond Meat sausage are all great products that matched our goals for flavor and being easy to work with!”
